My first Polyvore attempt...

  • Nov. 4th, 2008 at 11:14 AM

I have always found the concept of Polyvore intriguing.  I love doing collages and always have; combine this with fashion and you've got Polyvore!  Thanks to a style contest at The Princess Portal I had the reason I needed to open a Polyvore account and get started!  So here it  is, my first attempt!

It's Hot!!!

  • Oct. 7th, 2008 at 1:25 PM

It's really hot here today!  The hot wind in blowing in over the hills and it's really humid.  I went to a local coffee shop called The Blue Bean this afternoon to get an iced caramel macchiato to beat the heat.  It tastes great!  I had to get out a cute tee-shirt and skirt combo!  Tee-shirt from Apple Sugar, skirt from In the Starlight, Hello Kitty headband, stripey socks from Leg Avenue, kitty shoes from TUK, and an adorable Tenshineko purse that my bestest friend just sent me!

A New Skirt!

  • Oct. 5th, 2008 at 6:05 PM

My birthday is this month, so I have some extra money to spend on some new things.  One of my first purchases was this lovely bustle-back two-of-a-kind skirt from In the Starlight!  I'm so pleased with how it looks in real life.  I paired it with a high-necked cutsew from Anthropologie, cream lace tights from Urban Outfiters, red shoes from Rampage (I found these for $5.99 at Gottchalk's!), and a metal bow headband from Claire's.  I'm absolutely in love with the new curling iron I bought!  It makes the perfect Lolita curls!

A self portrait!

Hey, I may be turning 26 (gah!), but I can still look 4!

Strawberry Love...

  • Sep. 16th, 2008 at 6:50 PM

It seems like strawberries have been in season and cheap around here since April!  I love strawberries so I've been trying to get my fill before they disappear.  At this rate though, they'll be in season all year long.  My husband told me that strawberry production has increased in this area by something like 40% or more because of a new variety.  I don't care what the reason is; these strawberries are wonderful and sweet, sweet, sweet!

I'm a strawberry monster!  Those are my real fingernails by the way; I can't stand fake ones!

Strawberry love!  Fresh strawberries and Ichigo Daifuku Mochi

On Saturday afternoon I went to school/work with my husband, Ian. He’s in his last year before getting his Bachelor’s degree in soil science and is working on his senior project. He took soil samples from a local winery and is doing a soil survey for them. I spent yesterday grinding up soil in a mortar and pestal and putting it through a sieve to get out the rocks (so much fun…). I was glad to help him, but it was pretty boring (even while listening to Muse) and made my arm tired. I did get a caramel macchiato from It’s a Grind out of it though!
We also got to the library, which is great because I was running on empty when it comes to books!  I got Voices by Ursula Le. Guin (not my favorite series by her, but I'm desperate at the moment) and The Snow Fox by Susan Fromberg Schaeffer which takes place in Heian Era Japan (right up my alley!).  It's turning out to be a great read!
This afternoon we went to check on my Ian’s grandmother’s house. She recently had to move in with his parents because of eyesight issues, but is keeping the family home for the time being. We live about twenty minutes away so we check on it periodically. There are two rather brazen deer that seem to have taken up residence in her yard. They seem to like eating her succulents.

Can you spot the deer in this photograph?
Jasper came along for the trip and he and I found a falcon feather in the garden. Ian promptly stole it after we showed it to him! The pink roses were so beautiful! I wish I had a garden where I could grow roses. I have to make due with a terrace full of potted plants. I’m thankful for what I have though.

We had lunch at local café called Easy as Pie; I had a chicken pot pie. It was so rich (and delcious!).  Then we visited an old friend (and my former co-worker) who works at a nearby gallery. Jasper tried out the cherry wood rocking chair that my mom always has to sit in when she’s there while Ian and Patrick talked about soil science.
Ian got Butterfinger ice cream and I got yet another caramel machiatto, this time from The Coffee Den (their roast is so good!). Then we went down to the bluff for a little hike and Jazz had fun letting his hair blow in the breeze. I’ve been working on a new storyline this weekend; a storyline that involves vampires (I know, I know, done and done, but if it ever gets published, you’ll see. It’s very very different and if it can help me get my foot in the door; I’m perfectly happy to do it!).

Vacation and Rats...

  • Sep. 11th, 2008 at 11:22 AM

A couple of weeks back we went for a visit to my parents’ and my husband’s family's (they still all live in the same town where we met and married!). We did a lot of fun things while we were there (many of which included shopping, yay!). We visited the zoo (I spent most of the time trying to get a glimpse of the fox, a ritual I started when I was a child), a giant koi pond (one of my husband’s passions), and had Swedish pancakes at the Dala Horse (yummy!). I was able to visit a Sanrio store while I was there where I purchased an adorable Hello Kitty as Alice tote bag! There was this sweet old-fashioned candy shop that just recently opened that had delicious gelato. I had Bavarian mint! The little plastic spoons they gave you to eat it with were so cute; mine was pink!
There is also a Whole Foods Market there which is a wonderful grocery store. I was able to find a pack of edible flowers there so I just had to buy them! I put them in salad and used them to decorate cupcakes to share! They were so pretty! If you have never tried edible flowers, please do. If you can find them, they make a very lovely addition to salads and make desserts look so dreamy. They don’t really add much flavor, but they look so dear!
We also visited a Japanese grocery store and fish market. I was so glad to pick up some Lotte Ume gum, Ichigo Daifuku, and a huge bottle of Calpico Lychee; they are all some of my favorite things. The store had a second floor with gift items where my husband found a wooden sushi bowl to his liking (he’s been on the search for the perfect one for quite awhile now) and I found a red and white plum blossom kanzashi for $12.00! Imagine my surprise at finding such a treasure and it was made in Japan!
We also seem to have acquired a rat while we were there. I say acquired because we did not purchase her and she came with her cage, food, etc. Someone at my mom’s school could no longer care for her and they were looking for a good home for her. I love rodents! My beloved dwarf hamster, Sabriel, passed away over a year ago. So now we have Miss Penelope Grayson, the silliest and sweetest rat around, along with, Hinata Haruko, our Min Pin who came from the animal shelter, and, Ichigo, the leopard gecko! We can’t have just one pet for some reason!

Cameos and Hot Chocolate...

  • Sep. 10th, 2008 at 2:46 PM

In the past few weeks I have been thinking about coming back to my blog a lot...I love writing and I really want to get myself to sit down and just share my thoughts on daily life.  So here's my first attempt!  I hope I can stick with it!
Today started out kind of blah.  I was just having one of those days where I couldn't seem to focus on anything for any period of time.  I spent much of the morning staring at my harp!  I listened to music for awhile, but even that wasn't really calming me down.  I get like that sometimes, but usually only after finishing a book I really love.  I guess you could call it "mourning"!  Today, however, there was no rhyme or reason to it; I just couldn't sit still.
Thankfully my day was saved when this beautiful black cameo arrived in the mail from my husband's aunt!  She and her husband were visiting a few weeks back and we had them over for dinner.  I cooked this monstrous traditional Japanese feast that I was rather proud of!  Anyhoo, she sent me this lovely cameo to say "thank you".  She set it and made the beaded chain herself.  She and her husband are antique dealers so we get along great!  I love that the woman has a bow in her hair!  So so lolita and so so cute!

After that unlooked for and lovely break in my day I decided that I needed something comforting and then I could get on with the day.  So I made myself hot chocolate and put it in the lovely rose mug my mom bought for me from a little shop in Kingsburg, California.  So now here I am, writing in my blog for the first time it months!  Yay!

Princess Day!

  • Dec. 16th, 2007 at 8:41 AM

I was feeling quite yucky this week and so my husband decided to rent Marie Antoinette for me as I had been wanting to see it.  So I made it into a lovely mini-princess day with tea out of a favorite teacup and pink lemonade.   The colors and the set dressings (as well as the clothing) were a wonderful feast for the eyes and I am feeling much better now!

Welcome Back to an Old Friend!

  • Dec. 10th, 2007 at 10:43 AM

I read Victoria magazine from the time I was very young and I think it very much affected me growing into the Lolita I am today.  It was a magazine that featured articles on living life beautifully with a very obviously Victorian bent.  I was very sad when it went off the market back in 2003 as were many longtime readers.  Well, now it's back!  I just recently received my new copy of the Victoria I know and love.  I am very happy to flip through its lovely pages once again, drool over the flower arrangements and art and fashion of the past, and cook wonderful recipes!  Welcome back, Victoria!
